I have been asked to build sculptures for the Rock on the Range concert in Columbus, Ohio. Rock on the Range will be at the Columbus Crew Stadium, on May 21 - 22, 2011. There will be 3 stages, over 40 bands, and it will be hosted by Juliya from FuseTV. The concert is already sold out with an expected crowd of 60,000 people over two days.
The sculptures will frame an art exhibit kiosk. The first design was planned for one sculpture, but the organizers liked my design so much they want two! My concept was to attract attention using LED lighting, be patriotic with a red, white, and blue color scheme, and to include metal since you can't say Avenged Sevenfold is a pop band.
The original designs for these sculptures were drawn in 2004 and based on the events of 9/11/2001. Terrorism struck the United States on September 11, 2001 and I immediately felt there must be a way to honor all the fallen heroes and fellow citizens. However, in 2004 I didn't have the talent, skill, or knowledge to pull this off. Now I do... and I'm so excited to honor the United States of America.
Patriotism might be the outward theme, however I believe American citizens are a little confused whether it's politics, budget crises for governments from the nation to the local level, and how does America come together while we figure out how to make America work for each other... And by our healing, help the world?
I want us, as citizens of the United States, to shine the light on each other... we are Americans first! Our foundation as a people has been to buckle down, get our bootstraps tight, get to work, and help each other. Together we help ourselves so we have the opportunity to help the world.
That's what this sculpture is built upon. Work hard, sacrifice... by us and those before us who helped build our opportunities of today... We make each other strong!
